If you google the term “serve the Lord”, you will find that there are over 8 million items you can search. BUT if you google the term “serving the Lord at an Air Force base in Germany”, you will find nothing …. zippo….nada….nichts. We decided to remedy that situation and here is our list. You know you are serving the Lord at an Air Force base in Germany when…… |
…you know the difference between Wienerschnitzel, Jagerschnitzel, and Zigeunerschnitzel..….and you like all three |

…you have your own personal air show of F-16s, A-10s, and C-17s in the skies over your house every week …the chaplain at Sunday services usually asks, “Do we have anyone here for the first time?”, but also asks, “Do we have anyone here for the last time?” …it takes a 7 ½ hour plane ride and a 2 hour car ride for your grandkids to come visit |
…you stand for the national anthem before every movie at the base theater …you can visit a 1000 year old castle on a day trip with the gang from the Hangar …the truck ringing the bell while driving through the neighborhood doesn’t serve ice cream, it collects metal for recycling …you need to multiply your recipes by six and you never have leftovers |
…you can visit 5 different countries in an afternoon drive from your house …instead of playing golf or going to a Tigers game on your birthday, you spend it with the Hangar gang sleeping in a youth hostel in Slovenia …the terms PCS, TDY, CDC, ORI, and TLF become part of your everyday lingo …the news reports from Iraq and Afghanistan take on greater significance because you can picture specific faces as you pray for them |
…you get to celebrate your 38th wedding anniversary with a young couple who is celebrating their 2nd |
…you learn to say “fahrt” without blushing because it doesn’t mean what it sounds like.
If any of these are confusing, you’ll just have to come for a visit and personally experience them---we would love it! We have had to say goodbye to a number of airmen and families this summer. It is the hardest part of ministry because as they leave they take a part of our hearts with them. However, we know God has others waiting to come join the gang and that is always exciting. Please pray that we will make connections with new people arriving at Spangdahlem and that they will want to join us at the Hangar. We are so thankful for your support both financially and prayerfully. We only wish that ALL of you could meet these exceptional young people. Love, Roger and Sheila Joshua 24:15 |
